RACE EVENT SUCCESSFUL

Intermountain Endurance’s Race Event Benefited the GSRTA

Forty-nine hearty runners came together on the GSRT near Bartle on July 15th to participate in the first annual “Great Shasta Endurance Run”.  The event, originally planned for May 6th, was postponed because the trail was still blocked by snow (173% of normal this year) on that date.  Runners left the Bartle Trail Head and ran east, each race group turning around at the appropriate half-way mark.   July 15th turned out to be the hottest day of the year at that point.

According to race organizer Jenifer Rishel, the runners fared well despite the heat, assisted by the ice, electrolytes, and water provided to them.  Winners of the three events were:

50k:  Isaiah Roggow, first male;  Adele Fenwick, first female

30k:  Tung Ng, first male;  Megan Hirshi, first female

10k:  Dave Petterson, first male;  Tami Banburry, first female

Presented as a benefit for the Great Shasta Rail Trail, runner entrance fees generated (after expenses) $304 to donate to the general fund.

This, the first Great Shasta Endurance Run, was deemed a success.  The participants achieved their goals of finishing their chosen races and were grateful for the support provided by Jennifer.  Reflecting on the day, she said that “… the races went very, very well.  It was a lot of work, though… I’ll need more volunteers to help put things together next year and I’d really like some sponsors to increase the gift to the Trail.  However, my first-year goals of spreading the word about what a great running trail we have here and raising funds to help keep the trail open and improving were met.  It will be even better next year!”
